Department of Church History, Patrology & Palæochristian Archaeology

About us

About us

Welcome to the Department of Church History, Patrology, and Palæochristian Archaeology.

Aim

The main objective of our department is to provide a better and clearer comprehension of Church history for the understanding of present day modern problems, for a deeper understanding of the concept of truth, and for an effective apologia of the Church.

Vision

Every year we offer various study-units that provide a basic introduction to different areas of study. These include units on Patristic studies, the development of Christian thought and practice in Europe, Church-State relations, Christianity and European Integration, and the Church in Malta.

Every other year we also offer an undergraduate Diploma in the Archival and Cultural Appreciation of Ecclesiastical Patrimony (MQF Level 5). This course is intended to provide students with the elements necessary to interpret the Church’s cultural heritage within the broader context of significant events and movements in the history of the European continent.

Research

The twofold focus of our research is local ecclesiastical history within a European context, and Patristic studies, especially topics related to the Eastern Fathers.
