Applicants must be in possession of:

  1. a Bachelor's degree with at least Second Class Honours or a higher degree in any of the following areas: Counselling, Criminology, ICT, Law, Management, Planning and Environment, Psychology, Social Policy, Social Work, Social Studies, Sociology or Youth and Community Studies or
  2. a Bachelor's degree with at least Second Class Honours or a higher degree from this or from another university in an area which is deemed comparable or relevant by the Board of Studies.

All applicants shall be required to demonstrate that they have the necessary aptitude and disposition to follow the Course with profit.

Professional aptitude and disposition shall be measured by means of exercises involving (i) role play with a client, (ii) group discussion, and (iii) a personal interview conducted by a board appointed for the purpose.

Requires the submission of a Police Certificate of Conduct.

The Master of Arts in Mediation is a degree course in one branch of the law, that of mediation. This degree course provides a comprehensive knowledge of and training in the core legal and non-legal subjects related to mediation. This course requires you to acquire a detailed knowledge of all the various skills required for use by a mediator. It offers compulsory study-units which are assessed at the end of each semester. The programme of studies extends over a period of five semesters of part-time studies. Lectures are held in the evening, normally spread over three days a week, except for the case of the practicum where placements of 50 hours are held in the morning.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Master of Arts in Mediation – M.A.- under the auspices of the Faculty of Laws.

If you have successfully completed the Master of Arts in Mediation, you should be able to:

  • Master the fundamentals of mediation
  • Distinguish mediation from other disciplines
  • Recognise the advantages of mediation over adversarial conflict resolution methods and manage disputes
  • Build on their foundation academic knowledge and through this process help them shift their knowledge paradigm
  • Master and assimilate the dynamics that enable prospective clients to disclose their issues and negotiate an agreement
  • Gain diverse perspectives from a multidisciplinary input and student background
