The Master in Teaching and Learning (MTL) is an entry-level qualification for teachers. Students who will follow this course will specialise in Pedagogical Content Knowledge (after having obtained a first-cycle degree at first-cycle level in Content Knowledge), in Educational Context Knowledge and in Educational Research and Inquiry. These are intrinsically related to the Field Placement in schools. Furthermore, the wider educational context will be included in the programme through Educational Themes and Creative Positive Learning Environments. The MTL bridges theory and practice thereby forming educators as reflective, inquiring and collegial professionals. It promotes teaching and learning for democracy and social justice.
Skills acquired throughout the course are directly transferable to classrooms, schools and communities: these include teaching techniques, class management skills, teachers as leaders, democracy and social knowledge within the teaching profession etc. The research element of the MTL will allow students to engage with specific issues related to Education and/or their field of specialisation.
The MTL enables graduates to teach at Primary and Secondary level, according to the area of specialisation chosen. The course will be offered to prepare teachers in a number of subjects. Apart from being in possession of a first cycle degree obtained with at least Second Class (Honours) or Category II as indicated further below, applicants shall:
(a) submit a Police Good Conduct Certificate issued by the Commissioner of Police in terms of the Conduct Certificates Ordinance and
(b) not be included in the Register established under the Protection of Minors (Registration) Act.
In addition to the requirements for admission applicants shall be in possession of the following:
For Home Economics: a first cycle degree in Home Economics. For Health and Social Care: a first cycle degree with at least 70 ECTS credits in a relevant area of study. The requirements listed in the above paragraphs may be fulfilled through presentation of qualifications the content of which is deemed to be comparable to said requirements by the University Admissions Board on the recommendation of the Faculty Admissions Committee.
In cases where an applicant lacks essential knowledge in particular areas not covered in his/her first degree, the Faculty Board, on the recommendation of the Board of Studies, may require the applicant to follow and pass supplementary study-units at Level 4 or lower to which not more than 12 ECTS credits are assigned.
Applicants with a first cycle degree or a diploma who do not fully meet the requirements for admission specified above, shall be required to demonstrate the learning achieved through prior experience and certification through the evaluation procedures established by the University Policy for the Recognition and Accreditation of Prior Learning. The Board may then recommend to the University Admissions Board to either (i) admit the applicant to the Course or (ii) admit the applicant to the Course subject to the successful completion of a Preparatory Programme as directed by the Board, comprising not more than 60 ECTS credits.
Students shall be required to:
(a) sit for a Maltese Aptitude Test - 'Test ta' Ħiliet fil-Malti' at the beginning of the Course: provided that applicants in possession of a pass in Maltese at Secondary Education Certificate level at Grade 3 or higher, or at Intermediate or Advanced Matriculation Level at Grade C or higher, or qualifications deemed to be equivalent by the Board, shall be exempt from this requirement. Students who fail the Maltese aptitude test shall be required to follow and successfully pass a proficiency course in Maltese approved by the Board before the end of the third semester of the Course. Students who do not satisfy the Maltese proficiency requirement by this period shall be required to interrupt their studies for up to a maximum of twelve months during which time they are expected to obtain this requirement. Students shall only be eligible to proceed with their studies if they comply with this requirement and
(b) follow and successfully pass a proficiency course in English approved by the Board before the end of the third semester of the Course. Students who do not satisfy the English proficiency requirement by this period shall be required to interrupt their studies for up to a maximum of twelve months during which time they are expected to obtain this requirement. Students shall only be eligible to proceed with their studies if they comply with this requirement. Students who on admission into the Course are in possession of a pass in English at Secondary Education Certificate level at Grade 3 or higher, or at Intermediate or Advanced Matriculation Level at Grade C or higher, or qualifications deemed to be equivalent by the Board, shall be exempt from the English proficiency requirement.
The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2022.

Recognise and value the advocacy role that teachers have between the student and the educational institutions, their structures and policies. 6. Demonstrate the ability to nurture and develop the relationship between teacher and students. 7. Justify and defend that individual students need different support in their education process, 8. Recognise the political role that education has for the State, and how this is reflected in policies and institutional structures, 9. Theorise about ‘becoming-teacher’ as an ongoing process of growth. Rather than seeing oneself as ‘being a teacher’, the focus is on the constant process of ‘becoming-teacher’. This implies that one is to reflect continuously about one’s own practices and the education institutions one is working in. 10. Recognise and value that research is seen not only as production of knowledge but also part of the reflective process in becoming-teachers.
The course is intended for those who are interested in teaching as a career and who wish to carry out their studies in the field of Education.
On completion of the MTL one is eligible to apply for a teacher's warrant and is fully qualified to teach in schools and to start a career in a field related to Education. The course also leads to further study in the field should one wish to obtain a degree of specialisation in Education.
