The Master of Science in Telecommunications Engineering aims to equip you with knowledge and technological skills to analyse, design, maintain and develop modern telecommunications systems and networks. It enhances the skills acquired during undergraduate studies to an advanced level, essential for a career in today’s communications industry. The M.Sc. seeks to provide you an understanding of the theory, practice and the current research trends in the field of telecommunications. Through core topics and a selection of advanced elective topics, you will be able to select the areas of greatest interest leading to the M. Sc. Dissertation. The course also serves as an introduction if you are interested in pursuing a career in research.

The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of one of the following qualifications:

a Bachelor degree pegged at Level 6 on the Malta Qualifications Framework and obtained with at least Second Class (Honours) or Category II in ICT or an area with a strong ICT component, or in Engineering, provided that for the areas of Signal Processing and Machine Learning, or Data Science, applicants may be allowed to present a degree in an area of study deemed suitable by the Board or
a Bachelor degree pegged at Level 6 on the Malta Qualifications Framework classified with Third Class Honours or Category III in the areas outlined in paragraph (a) above, provided that such applicants shall satisfy the Board of Studies that they are in possession of other qualifications, or relevant work experience, obtained following their first cycle degree. The Board of Studies may recommend to the Faculty Admissions Committee that the admission of such applicants may be made conditional on the results of an interview conducted for the purpose or
any other Honours degree obtained with at least Second Class Honours, provided that applicants would have successfully completed at least three individual study-units as directed by the Board, prior to being admitted to the Course.

Interviews, when necessary, shall be conducted by a board composed of at least three members.

Eligible applicants may register as visiting students for individual study-units and obtain credit for them. Subject to approval by the Board, credits awarded for any such study-units may be transferred to the Course, provided that not more than seven years have elapsed from the successful completion of the study-unit. When credit for more than one study-unit is being transferred to the Course, then the seven years shall commence from the date of the last credit awarded.

The Board of Studies may, from time to time, offer additional study-units that may replace some of the above compulsory study-units as per the requirements of specific cohorts of students.

The University shall make every effort to ensure that the published Course Plans, Programmes of Study and study-units catalogues are complete and up-to-date, but reserves the right to make changes on the recommendation of the relevant Board.

This programme of study is governed by General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of the Degree of Master of Science - M.Sc. - under the auspices of the Faculty of Information and Communication Technology.

By the end of the course, you will show:

Demonstrate critical understanding of the mathematical foundations, engineering principles, and theoretical concepts underpinning modern telecommunications systems, including a critical comparison and evaluation of techniques currently in use.
Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of contemporary telecommunications technologies, including the capabilities, limitations, and appropriate use of relevant software and hardware tools employed in professional practice and research.
Critically appraise current telecommunications industry standards, as well as emerging and near-finalised standards, and explain their implications for system design, interoperability, and deployment.

Skills (applying knowledge and understanding) achieved by the end of the programme:

Apply, analyse, and synthesise mathematical and engineering concepts to model, evaluate, and optimise telecommunications systems and technologies.
Select, configure, and employ appropriate software and hardware tools to design, simulate, implement, and critically assess telecommunications solutions in academic, research, and professional contexts.
Design and conduct independent research, applying appropriate methodologies to critically analyse advanced telecommunications problems, interpret current research literature, and produce work of a standard suitable for postgraduate dissemination.

As an M.Sc. graduate specialising in Telecommunications Engineering, you will find employment in the broad areas of telecommunications, ICT infrastructure, multimedia signal processing and transmission, regulation, and software development for telecommunications and data processing applications. Furthermore, the knowledge and skills attained during this course open doors for you to seek employment with large research groups in industry, research institutes, and universities abroad. Moreover, together with an undergraduate programme in an engineering or computer science related field and two years working experience under a professional engineer, this programme makes you eligible to the Maltese Engineering Warrant.

This degree enables also further studies leading to a doctorate degree.
