About

TechTrek 2026 is a five-day summer bootcamp by the Faculty of ICT at the University of Malta, with the support of the Malta Digital Innovation Authority (MDIA), for students aged 13-15 who are curious about how technology can be used to understand and respond to real-world challenges.

Working in small groups, participants will identify a problem, explore possible technologies and AI-driven approaches, and develop a simple prototype or proof of concept. The programme combines hands-on activity with guided support, helping students move from ideas to something they can demonstrate and explain.

What to Expect

This edition focuses on learning techniques and applying technologies for a purpose. Students begin with a real-world question and build towards a solution using accessible tools and technologies. Along the way, they are supported by mentors and short, targeted inputs that help them make progress without requiring prior experience.

Participants will:

  • explore how technology and AI connect to everyday issues
  • work collaboratively in small teams
  • design and develop a simple project
  • present their work at the end of the week

Themes

Projects will be framed around broad societal themes such as:

  • environment and local challenges
  • digital wellbeing and online behaviour
  • representation, fairness, and bias

These themes provide direction while allowing students to shape their own ideas.

Technologies

Depending on their project, students may explore areas such as:

  • computer vision
  • natural language processing
  • robotics
  • IoT and sensing

No prior knowledge is required. Tools and guidance will be provided.
