Department of Applied Biomedical Science - Faculty of Health Sciences

 

The appointee will be required to assist in the upkeep, administration and running of the teaching and research laboratories, and to manage the running and setting up of the BSc (Hons) ABS practical sessions, at the Department of Applied Biomedical Science in the Faculty of Health Sciences and any other laboratories utilised by the department and as may be required by the University.

 

Eligibility

The position of Laboratory Officer requires the post holder to be in possession of:

  • A BSc degree (MQF Level 6) in Applied Biomedical Science or a related science subject, including but not limited to Medical Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Biology and Chemistry; or
  • Relevant Higher Diploma (MQF Level 5) in Biomedical Science or equivalent qualifications; or
  • One (1) ‘A’ level (in Biology or Chemistry) and five (5) ‘O’ Level passes together with five (5) years’ experience in a related science laboratory environment; or
  • Four (4) years of experience in the grade of Laboratory Assistant.

Experience with administrative process of procurement and consumables will be also considered an asset.

Skills, Knowledge and Competencies:
 

  • A knowledge of basic laboratory safety and adherence to health and safety regulations at all times,
  • Fluency in computer applications,
  • Good motivational skills and the ability to work under limited supervision,
  • Ability to work as a team, and
  • A good level of spoken and written English.

 

Salary Details

The salary attached to the post for 2026 is €24,716, rising by annual increments of €400 up to a maximum of €27,516. On completion of four years of service in this grade, the appointee will be entitled to move on to the next salary band with annual increments of €440 up to a maximum of €29,373. After a further period of two years, the appointee will, on satisfactory performance, be entitled to move on to the next salary band with annual increments of €450 up to a maximum of €33,381. After a further period of two years, the appointee will, on satisfactory performance, be entitled to move on to the next salary band with annual increments of €500 up to a maximum of €33,494, on satisfactory performance.

Further Information

The appointee will be required to assist in the upkeep and day-to-day running and maintenance of laboratories, including stock taking, setting up laboratories for practical sessions, research and demonstration work; the purchase reagents and equipment; carry out any related administrative work; regular monitoring and maintenance of equipment, whilst adhering to rigorous health and safety requirements.

The Department is responsible for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research in areas relating to the different areas of Applied Biomedical Science.

 

Key Duties

The appointee will be required to:

  • Assist in the overall inspection of the labs, including cleanliness, waste management and state of equipment and conformity checks;
  • Assist in the setting up and test-running of procedures in both the teaching and research laboratories any other laboratories newly set up or utilised by the department;
  • Assist in duties relating to the preparation for practical sessions organised by the department.
  • Assist in any research work in the laboratories and support selected research activities;
  • Provide technical support in all aspects including laboratory analysis;
  • Assist in procurement, set up and purchasing of laboratory equipment, consumables, reagents and other teaching materials;
  • Assist academic staff and students in the production of effective communications media;
  • Assist in the maintenance of laboratory records, including logbooks for laboratory equipment;
  • Perform routine and regular monitoring and maintenance, and (when necessary) calibration of laboratory equipment;
  • Assist in ordering of stock, equipment inventory and regular stock/inventory audits;
  • Under the guidance of academic staff, help in the preparation of material for teaching and publication purposes;
  • Assist in duties related to health and safety and quality assurance procedures;
  • Be ready to undergo specific training for example on new equipment, according to the needs of the department;
  • Assist in other duties as directed by the Head of Department.

 

The appointee is expected to work:

  • on a full-time basis, and will not be allowed to engage in any other gainful employment without the permission of the Council; and
  • at such places and during such hours as may be determine by the University authorities.

 

The Selection Procedures:

In accordance with the guidelines, members of the Selection Board will establish the following selection criteria for the selection process:

  • Relevant academic qualifications
  • Relevant work experience
  • Aptitude and suitability; and
  • Performance in interview

The appointment will be subject to a probationary period of six months and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University of Malta which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
