Applications are invited for the Post of Teaching Associate or Senior Teaching Associate in the Centre for Academic Literacies and English Communication Skills of the University of Malta.

The appointment will be offered on an indefinite, subject to a one-year probationary period.

The appointee will be required to contribute to the teaching up to and including MQF Level 5 and administrative duties of the Centre, and as may be required by the University.

 

Teaching Associate

Applicants will be required to have a first degree (Level 6) and a Master’s degree (Level 7) in Applied Linguistics or related area with a specialisation in English and a minimum of three (3) years relevant teaching experience.

 

Senior Teaching Associate

Applicants will be required to have a first degree (Level 6) and a Master’s degree (Level 7) in Applied Linguistics or related area with a specialisation in English and a minimum of six (6) years relevant teaching experience.

 

Salary

The annual salary for 2026 attached to Teaching Associate and Senior Teaching Associate is as follows:

 

Teaching Associate; €41,365 plus Academic Work Resources of €2,146.00 

Senior Teaching Associate; €45,962 plus Academic Work Resources of €2,146.00

Further Information

General Working Obligations:

A Teaching Associate or Senior Teaching Associate will be appointed on a full-time (40) hour per week basis between Monday to Friday out of which no more than half shall be devoted to teaching.

A Teaching Associate or Senior Teaching Associate will be expected to work between 08:00 and 17:00 hours and beyond 17:00 hours no more than once per week.

The role of a Teaching Associate or Senior Teaching Associate will include preparation, teaching, assessment and administration.

 

The Centre for Academic Literacies and English Communication Skills

The Centre was established in 2012. Its aims are to improve students’ confidence in their communication skills while equipping them with the discipline-specific academic discourse. To help students achieve their goals throughout their course and assist them in their future professional life, the Centre adopts specific roles that reflect the changing dynamics of academic literacy and the professional world. These roles involve supporting students in mastering a range of communication strategies and critical skills, transitioning students to the academic discourse of their discipline-specific course, and ensuring continued support in English as the university’s chosen language of instruction.

Besides preparation, teaching, assessment and administration, the duties which the appointee will be expected to perform within the Centre are:

  • Promoting students in their academic welfare;
  • Identifying students who are encountering difficulties and providing additional support as needed;
  • Being available for consultation with students;
  • Using the University of Malta’s VLE (Moodle) to interact with students;
  • Preparing academic reports regarding student progress and attendance;
  • Coordinating continuous assessment of students by preparing formative tests and providing detailed feedback to students;
  • Assisting in the development of test items, marking and examining of external tests set by the Centre Participating in Board of Studies meetings;
  • Participating in Board of Examiners’ meetings and setting and marking summative examination papers within established time-frames;
  • Training assessors specifically for the external tests;
  • Organising and participating in seminars and/or conferences as required;
  • Contributing to national and regional development particularly in the area of specialisation and through cooperation with governmental, intergovernmental, regional and non-governmental institutions and services;
  • Any other relevant duties as may be required by the University.

 

The Selection Procedures

  • The evaluation of qualifications and experience claimed and supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application).
  • Short-listing of candidates.
  • An invitation to short-listed candidates to a Selection Board interview.
  • A short presentation on a subject allotted to short-listed candidates.

 

The Selection Process

The selection process will follow the document “Guidelines for Members of Selection Boards in the Recruitment of Resident Academic Staff” (https://www.um.edu.mt/hr/policiesprocedures).

In accordance with the guidelines, members of the Selection Board will establish the following selection criteria for the selection process:

  • Relevant academic qualifications
  • Relevant Academic / Work experience
  • Aptitude and suitability; and
  • Performance in interview

The appointment will be subject to the provisions of the Statues, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
