This workshop is designed to provide staff with basic tools and insights needed to navigate and thrive within an increasingly diverse workplace. Participants will explore how cultural and ethnic diversity can be harnessed to develop team collaboration and innovation. Through practical case studies and guided discussion, the session aims to enhance staff’s knowledge about existing support services, and elicit actionable strategies to foster an inclusive, culturally-competent environment.
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:
Analyse the impact of cultural and ethnic diversity on workplace dynamics, identifying both potential challenges and strategic assets;
Evaluate current organisational supports and best practices that facilitate effective intercultural communication;
Apply resolution-based strategies to real-world workplace scenarios, leveraging diversity to achieve positive outcomes;
Formulate a practical roadmap for implementing intercultural supports and practices within their specific work units over the short and medium term.
Session 1: Mapping the Intercultural Landscape - Dr Omar N'Shea
Aims and Introduction:Overview of workshop objectives.
Participant Reflection: A facilitated discussion eliciting the cultural and ethnic differences participants negotiate in their daily workplace settings.
Key Concepts: Introduction to core frameworks:
Intersectionality: Understanding how overlapping identities impact workplace experience.
Integration vs. Assimilation: Moving toward a culture that values difference rather than erasing it.
Inclusion: Practical definitions for the UM context.
Session 2: Navigating UM Policies and Support Provisions - Ms Nadia Abdilla
Institutional Frameworks: Overview of UM’s human rights-based policies and rigorous engagement standards.
Support Services: Identification of the specific UM Health and Wellness Centre resources and other community support services available to staff.

Session 3: Applied Practice – Case Scenarios and Simulations - Dr Maria Brown
Collaborative Group Work:Participants are divided into teams to tackle challenging, typical workplace encounters involving cultural and ethnic differences.
Strategy Formulation: Groups will draft a "way forward" by synthesizing:
Applicable UM policies.
Cultural assets inherent in the scenario.
Internal UM support services.
Plenary Presentation: Groups present their outcomes followed by peer-to-peer review and expert feedback.
Session 4: Reflections and Concluding Remarks
Open Q&A:Opportunity for participants to seek clarification on specific issues, and consolidation of how this can be done beyond this workshop.
Suggestions for Growth: Participants provide feedback on institutional needs regarding intercultural relations, with a vision of the UM bolstering a culture of sustainable, long-term dialogue.
