The CIS Department is one of the first departments within the Faculty of ICT of the University of Malta, and actually predates the Faculty itself. Our Department was established in 1993 and has always played an essential role in many of the degree programmes offered by various University entities - even before the establishment of the Faculty of ICT itself in 2007.
CIS, as a field of academic study, encompasses:
Had one to put it in a nutshell… CIS deal with the study and development of structuring, management and access of electronic/digital information in all its forms, extent and aspects and the study and usage of technologies relating to this, as well as the study and quantification of the impact this has on society, or, as Freeman and Hart put it, '…[the] development of systems we all can live with' (Freeman, P., Hart, D., ACM August 2004, 47(8), 19-21).
Our mission is to provide knowledge and skills in the construction and management of digital information in the framework of an ever-changing and evolving digital economy through a balanced measure of scientific, technical and applicative aspects aimed at equipping individuals with the proper and relevant knowledge and tools essential to work within a modern, multi-disciplinary and competitive ICT landscape.
