Prof. Farrugia graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Malta in 1991 with a B.Pharm.(Hons.) degree. In 1994 he was awarded a scholarship grant by the University of Malta and a research assistantship by the Institute for Tuberculosis Research at the University of Illinois at Chicago, enabling him to pursue his studies towards a Ph.D. in Pharmacy, with specialisation in Pharmaceutics, which he obtained in December 1998. In recognition of his academic achievements, Prof. Farrugia was inducted to both the Rho Chi Pharmacy Honor Society and the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society.

Prof. Farrugia was appointed Lecturer in Chemistry at the Junior College of the University of Malta in 2001. He was subsequently appointed Senior Lecturer in Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry in 2007, and promoted to Associate Professor in 2012. He currently lectures in both biological and applied chemistry, and oversees all the department's chemistry practical study units.

Prof. Farrugia is closely linked with the pharmaceutical industry in Malta, with experience in Good Manufacturing Practices, quality assurance and regulatory affairs.
