Dr Lara Sammut is an Assistant Lecturer within the Department of Radiography, Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Malta and a Higher Allied Health Practitioner specialising in obstetric and gynaecological ultrasound. She also maintains an active clinical role within the Ultrasound Unit of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at Mater Dei Hospital, contributing to early pregnancy and gynaecological ultrasound services. Her work integrates clinical practice, postgraduate education and translational research in ultrasound imaging.
Dr Sammut obtained her Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Radiography from the University of Malta and began her clinical career at Mater Dei Hospital, gaining experience across several imaging areas including Theatre Radiography, Mobile Radiography, Bone Density imaging and Mammography. She later joined the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Ultrasound Unit, where she developed a clinical focus in early pregnancy and gynaecological ultrasound.
She subsequently completed an MSc in Medical Imaging (Obstetric and Gynaecological and Abdominal Ultrasound), offered by the University of Malta in collaboration with the University of Leeds, and began contributing to postgraduate ultrasound education through clinical mentoring, teaching and academic support.
Dr Sammut later joined the Department of Radiography at the University of Malta while continuing clinical practice at Mater Dei Hospital. She teaches and mentors students within undergraduate radiography education and postgraduate ultrasound programmes and supervises research projects in medical imaging and ultrasound practice.
She was awarded a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Malta in 2026. Her doctoral research investigated the predictive value of first-trimester ultrasound and biochemical markers in pregnancies complicated by threatened miscarriage. The findings have been disseminated through peer-reviewed publications and international conferences and have contributed to national discussions on early pregnancy loss and miscarriage leave policy.
Dr Sammut also serves as Chair of the Research Nexus Council within the Allied Health Directorate at the Ministry for Health and Active Ageing. Her research interests focus on early pregnancy ultrasound, predictive modelling and the translation of imaging biomarkers into clinically relevant decision-support tools.
