Véronique Vella is a full-time Lecturer in Music at the University of Malta. A composer, academic, arranger, and active performer, she made history in 2008 as the first Maltese woman to be awarded a Ph.D. in Music Composition. Her diverse creative and research portfolio encompasses orchestral, chamber, solo, electroacoustic, and acousmatic music.
Véronique completed her undergraduate and postgraduate music studies at Edinburgh Napier University, specialising in piano and composition. Her music education was supported by the Janatha Stubbs Foundation and two Ian Tomlin Scholarships. To complement her musical training, she also holds a Bachelor’s degree in English and Psychology from the University of Malta, which informs the broad, interdisciplinary perspective of her creative work. Before joining the University of Malta, she established a robust international teaching profile, lecturing at the University of Glasgow, Edinburgh Napier University, Edinburgh College, and the Douglas Academy of Music.
As a versatile pianist and recitalist, Véronique maintains a prominent collaborative practice bridging music, dance, theatre, and visual design. She serves as the class pianist for the ŻfinMalta National Dance Company and frequently collaborates with other major institutions including Teatru Malta, Teatru Manoel, and KorMalta.
Her compositions have achieved global recognition with performances across Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia. She has received commissions for major festivals, including the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Sound Festival, the Malta International Arts Festival, the Valletta Baroque Festival, and the opening ceremony of the Malta Biennale 2026. Her music has been performed by premier ensembles such as the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestra of Scottish Opera, and the Javus Quartett.
Véronique’s sheet music is published by Universal Edition and melisma.mt. Her discography includes international releases on PARMA Recordings and BAROS Records, featuring notable projects like '21 Dances for the 21st Century' and the concept album 'One of the Number', which was acquired by the National Archives of Malta for permanent preservation. Parallel to her studio work, she remains highly active as a recitalist and an arranger for national educational programmes and alternative acts.
