This programme provides diploma holders in occupational health and safety with the opportunity to further their education and obtain a degree within the discipline. Through a structured, interdisciplinary curriculum, the course delivers the professional knowledge and practical expertise essential to the field. This programme prepares you for professional practice in occupational health and safety through a structured and interdisciplinary curriculum. It integrates scientific principles, health and safety legislation, applied risk management, ergonomics and human factors, occupational health and occupational hygiene as well as principles of occupational health and safety management. Emphasis is placed on both theoretical knowledge and practical application, supported by training in investigative skills and advanced qualitative and quantitative research methods. Graduates acquire the knowledge, skills and professional competencies required to work effectively as occupational health and safety professionals across a range of organisational contexts and are prepared for further academic study in the field.

Communication and Academic Skills Programme

The communication and academic skills programme complements students’ main course of study. It introduces them to writing and presenting as situated within academic contexts sensitive to specific disciplines and develops their competences for future careers.

Information for International applicants

The Course shall be open to applicants in possession of the Diploma in Social Studies (Occupational Health and Safety) of this University with an average mark of 60% or over, or a comparable qualification in an area related to Occupational Health and Safety, or who have obtained ECTS credits for study-units considered by the Board of Studies to be equivalent to those in the programme of study. Subject to the provisions of the Principal Regulations, such applicants may be allowed by the Board of Studies to transfer these credits to the Course, provided that:

  1. the number of credits so transferred shall not exceed 60 ECTS credits and
  2. they may be required to follow a programme of study as approved by the Board of Studies.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Undergraduate Awards, 2019 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Bachelor in Occupational Health and Safety (Honours) - B. OHS(Hons) - under the auspices of the Centre for Labour Studies.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Apply scientific principles to health and safety practice: Demonstrate understanding of the physical, chemical, and biological principles that underpin workplace hazards and controls. Analyse how these scientific factors influence risk exposure, human health, and environmental impact.
  • Conduct effective risk assessment and control planning: Apply structured risk management methodologies to identify, evaluate, and prioritise workplace hazards. Recommend and justify appropriate control measures based on the hierarchy of control principles.
  • Interpret and apply legal requirements: Demonstrate understanding of national health and safety legislation, standards, and enforcement frameworks. Evaluate organisational compliance and develop strategies to meet legal and regulatory obligations.
  • Demonstrate competence in occupational health, hygiene and toxicology: Assess exposure to physical, chemical, biological, and ergonomic hazards using accepted occupational hygiene principles. Evaluate the toxicological properties of hazardous agents, including exposure routes and health effects. Recommend evidence-based monitoring, health surveillance, and control measures to prevent occupational illness and disorders.
  • Evaluate ergonomics and human factors: Apply ergonomic principles to improve workplace design, task organisation, and human performance. Analyse and prevent human error through consideration of cognitive and organisational factors.
  • Manage workplace safety programmes: Develop, implement, and evaluate systems for managing occupational safety, including incident reporting, emergency planning, fire safety, and first aid arrangements.

You will have the skills to design and implement advanced risk assessments and control measures across different sectors, supporting safety, health, and environmental wellbeing. This qualification enables you to contribute to executive decision-making, develop policies, and manage complex risks in large organisations, government bodies, or consultancies. It also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study or Master’s-level specialisation.
