Our research

Our main research themes are:

1. Optimization of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Oncology protocols for obese patients and populations using Medical Physics techniques.

The Maltese adults and paediatric population is unfortunately quite obese. This means that protocols routinely used in both imaging and therapy need to be significantly modified whilst accurate and precise patient dosimetry is more difficult. Use of unmodified protocols might lead to loss of diagnostic accuracy or ineffective therapy. We use our Medical Physics knowledge and skills to help these patients.

2. Professional and Educational and Training issues in Medical Physics

The study of Professional and Educational and Training issues is important to all professions but is particularly relevant to small professions such as Medical Physics. We are one of the very few Medical Physics entities in the world who accepts research proposals in this area and have been lead authors of such projects as the 'European Guidelines on the Medical Physics Expert' and several EFOMP policy statements.
