Rural Sciences & Food Systems

The Division of Rural Sciences and Food Systems offers undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the agricultural sciences, and conducts and coordinates research relevant to the needs of modern Maltese agriculture.

The Division’s remit also includes an input to the development of national agricultural plans, providing consultancy on the efficient use of local agricultural resources, and pioneering new and innovative agricultural technologies. We also fulfil a professional advisory role and provide extension services to the local farming community.

The Division focuses its efforts primarily on the following areas:

  • management of rural land resources
  • rural development
  • agricultural products and food systems
  • medicinal and aromatic plants
  • agro-ecosystems, including crop management and health
  • soil and water management
  • rural policy and legislation, and
  • landscape architecture.
