Sport for staff

Like students, staff benefit from free use of sport facilities during the University’s normal operating hours.

These include use of the sports hall for basketball, handball, badminton, volleyball, squash, table tennis and netball. Discounted rates for use of the Kinetika Gym and National Pool Complex are also available.

In addition, a number of opportunities to take part in organised sport events are also available. These include 5-aside football and volleyball tournaments. University of Malta staff are also encouraged to participate in sporting events organised by the Malta Employees Sports Association (MESA) and which include, among others, athletics, football, and tennis.

Through the Institute for PE and Sport (IPES), staff are given the opportunity to learn a new sport, improve their skills, and meet new people. Interested members of staff may discover the joy of playing, learning a new skill, meeting new people, getting active and having fun through participation in their selected sport discipline.

Interested in participating or booking a facility?
Contact Mr Oliver Mallia.

Squash courts are available for use by all members of staff during normal working hours. Courts may be booked online for sessions of 45 minutes duration.

Squash Ladder participants can use this facility to book a court for ladder challenges, or to make a 'provisional' booking to play a friendly match or do some training. Note that provisional bookings may be cancelled for you if the court is required for a squash ladder challenge. A 24-hour notice will be given if a provisional booking is cancelled and an email will be sent to you to inform you of the cancellation. Therefore, if there is less than 24 hours left, you can assume that the provisional court booking is confirmed.

Note also that:

  • At any one time, each member of staff can have only one booking challenge/provisional booking in place.
  • All bookings are subject to the courts not being required for use by IPES for the needs of this academic sports dept. In the event that IPES would need to use the courts, an email notification will be sent to you as early as possible.

Volleyball tournaments in aid of charity are held on an annual basis.

The IPES team won the first two editions of the University Staff Volleyball Tournament. The finals are generally followed by a reception and a presentation where the winning team, runners up and all participating teams (generally around 11 teams in total) from the different departments are awarded the cups and medals accordingly. More importantly a cheque is presented to a representative of the chosen charitable institution.

IPES organises staff 5-a-side football leagues in aid of charity annually with an average participation of 8 teams. Staff may make use of the 5-aside football pitches during lunch break.

Two badminton courts and table tennis tables are also available for use by University members of staff.

UM has recently launched it own running club open to members of staff of all abilities and fitness levels. Training sessions are held weekly at the UM athletics track. For further information contact Mr Clive Ferrante.

The University is also a member of Malta Employees Sports Association (MESA) with various University staff teams and individual members of staff competing regularly with other Government departments and parastatal bodies in football, volleyball, badminton and athletics.
