Getting a University Email Address

All students are provided with a University email address to be used for University-related communication, that will be retained after they complete their course of studies at the University. Notices sent by the University to this address are considered as official notices.

All students registered at the University of Malta are required to activate their UM IT Account in order to start using their University email address. The UM IT Account will also provide students with access to IT facilities and services (including IT Services workstations, printing, scanning etc.) and to other resources available on the University campus network.

Activation of the UM IT Account requires the use of the activation code. This code appears on the letter of acceptance sent to all students by the University. Students who have misplaced their acceptance letter are requested to call personally at IT Services Reception desk. Valid identification (ID Card or Passport) must be presented. Passwords are not sent via email due to security concerns.

The format of a student email address is:

Name: John Borg
Email Address:

where XX is a two digit number that is automatically allocated to each student and cannot be changed.

Transition from Junior College to University

Students who were allocated a UM IT Account for Junior College students will need to re-activate their account using the activation code that appears on the letter of acceptance sent to all students when they start their course of studies at the University. They will continue using the same username that was allocated to them during their course of studies at the Junior College. The same username is used to access the services and IT facilities at University. Junior College IT facilities will no longer be accessible.

Students will need to select their new University email address during the activation process. The Junior College email address will change to the new selected email address: becomes

Any messages that are sent to the JC email address will be delivered to the University mailbox for the duration of the current course, i.e. the messages will be automatically forwarded to the University email address.

Any mobile devices set up with the JC email address will need to be re-configured accordingly. More information is available here.

All JC emails and data files which were available on the JC open access workstations will be accessible through the University open access workstations.

Any printing credits that were available during the student's course of studies at JC can be utilised to print at the University.

Expiry of the University Email Address

Students who complete their course of studies at the University will retain their University email address after graduation. Otherwise, the notification of expiry of the address will be sent by email.

Students following subsequent courses at University will continue using the same address used during their first course.
