Before joining the University of Malta's Faculty of Dental Surgery, Dr Mifsud spent time in general dental practice in both Malta and the United Kingdom, working within the NHS before returning home to pursue a career in academic dentistry.
He read for his undergraduate degree in Dental Surgery at the University of Malta, graduating with special mention in Child Dental Health and Orthodontics. He then travelled to Germany to specialise in Prosthodontics at the University of Freiburg, training under Prof Dr Dr h.c. J.R. Strub and obtaining a masters in prosthodontics in 2015. On his return to Malta, Dr Mifsud joined the Faculty of Dental Surgery as Assistant Lecturer and Resident Academic, a period during which he also read for his PhD, successfully defending his thesis in 2021.
Dr Mifsud is a firm believer in the value of longitudinal, patient-centred research, and much of his work traces how dental implants loaded with overdentures perform over time. In addition, Dr. Mifsud became increasingly interested in what patients themselves report about function and quality of life, alongside the clinical measurements more traditionally used to judge success. This interest has extended naturally into digital dentistry, where he has examined how CAD/CAM workflows and material choices affect the fit and durability of restorations.
Alongside his research, Dr Mifsud chairs the Faculty's Research Ethics Committee and has recently joined a University research cluster established to develop a dedicated hub for digital dentistry research. He teaches across several of the Faculty's programmes and supervises undergraduate and Master's students through their dissertations.
Outside the University, Dr Mifsud maintains a clinical practice in prosthodontics and is periodically called upon as a court-appointed expert. He also gives regularly of his time to community dental outreach, from screening children in foster care to treating patients who might otherwise go without care, work he regards as inseparable from his academic role.
