Dr Francesca Wirth is a full-time Resident Academic at the Department of Pharmacy within the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery. She graduated as a pharmacist from the University of Malta in 2007 with First Class Honours and joined the Department of Pharmacy as a Research and Teaching Assistant in the same year.
Dr Wirth completed an MPhil in 2011 with a dissertation that involved developing a Quality System for Clinical Pharmacy Services at Karin Grech Hospital. The standards developed were consulted by the American College of Clinical Pharmacy to develop the ‘ACCP Standards of Practice for Clinical Pharmacists’. Reference to the standards developed for Karin Grech Hospital was made in an Editorial published in the Pharmacotherapy journal in 2014, titled ‘Standards of Practice for Clinical Pharmacists: The Time has Come’. Dr Wirth completed a PhD in 2015 with a dissertation on the Pharmacogenetic Implications of Clopidogrel Therapy, including the application of an innovative rapid point-of-care testing approach, in collaboration with the Departments of Cardiology and Pathology at Mater Dei Hospital.
Dr Wirth is actively involved in the pharmacy practice teaching and research group and the pharmacogenetics research group and supervises undergraduate projects and postgraduate dissertations in these areas. This research has led to a number of peer-reviewed publications and was presented as oral and poster presentations in international and local fora; including the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), European Society of Clinical Pharmacy (ESCP), European Association of Hospital Pharmacists (EAHP), European Association of Faculties of Pharmacy (EAFP), American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP), Malta Medical School Conference and the Maltese Cardiac Society Conference, amongst others.
Together with the Head of Department, Dr Wirth coordinates Erasmus+ mobility studies and traineeships for incoming and outgoing pharmacy and pharmaceutical technology students, as well as patient-oriented placements and experientials for undergraduate pharmacy students and Doctorate in Pharmacy students.
