Transdisciplinary Research Programme by Xjenza Malta

Xjenza Malta is launching a new Transdisciplinary Research Programme aimed at supporting collaborative, cross-sectoral research addressing Malta’s key societal challenges.

The programme encourages the integration of diverse disciplines and stakeholders including academia, private, public entities, and civil society, to co-create innovative solutions with tangible impact. Projects will align with the Horizon Europe Missions:

  • Adaptation to Climate Change
  • Cancer
  • Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities
  • Restore our Ocean and Waters
  • Soil

Funding

  • Project Grant: The maximum grant value per project (consortium) is EUR 300,000. Each partner must receive at least 20% of the total project budget.
  • Equipment & Consumables: Funding for instruments, specialised equipment, and consumables are capped at EUR 10,000 per partner.
  • Travel: Funding for travel ( conferences and coordination with foreign collaborators/stakeholders) is capped at EUR 5,000 per partner, excluding indirect costs.

Duration: 24 months

Actions: Selected projects largely include actions at TRL 5 or higher

Quadruple Helix: Consortia applying for this programme must include one legal entity from each of the four categories below

  • A Research Knowledge Dissemination Organisation (RKDO)
  • A Private for Profit Entity
  • A Public Entity
  • A Societal Organisation (e.g. civil society bodies)

By building trust and lasting relationships across the four categories, the quadruple helix helps to enhance the potential of partners to join competitive Horizon Project consortiums and secure the funding needed for long-term sustainability.
