Study Anthropology

The study of anthropology has always attracted individuals who are curious to learn about other peoples and other places.

Studying anthropology at the Department of Anthropological Sciences at the University of Malta would give you the opportunity to explore, learn and discover the cultures of different people around the globe. In the process you will also learn to view your own familiar worlds in a new light. Anthropologists learn to make the exotic familiar and the familiar exotic.

In what ways are societies different? Why are they different? Do these differences matter? How do cultures change over time?

Anthropologists believe that the way to answer these questions is by living with and becoming part of the people you are trying to study in a process known as participant observation. Training in anthropology will help you develop the ethnographic research skills necessary to undertake such participant observation and show you how you can apply these experiences and structured observations in order to answer concrete questions. Anthropologists in the department have worked across a number of regions in the globe and staff members have undertaken field research in East Asia, North Africa, Europe, the Mediterranean and Australia.

Our courses cover a diversity of topics including the study of migration, gender and sexualities, borders and borderlands, politics, law, economy, family, religion, human rights and emotions among others. Beyond these thematic areas students will also be able to pursue more region specific courses. Studying anthropology can be a life transforming journey into what makes us human.
