Travelling smart

At the University of Malta (UM), we are committed to fostering a culture of sustainable and active mobility. Through a wide range of initiatives, we actively encourage students and staff to choose greener transport options — such as walking, cycling, public transport, and carpooling — as part of our ongoing efforts to reduce our carbon footprint and promote healthier, more equitable travel choices.

Over the past decade, UM has implemented several practical measures to support this shift, including:

  • The "Getting to UM" travel information website, offering guidance to the UM community on sustainable travel options.

  • Investment in walking and cycling infrastructure, such as improved pathways, bike racks, and shower facilities for cyclists.

  • Public transport incentive schemes, including bus card support for students and staff.

  • Greater flexibility in work arrangements, such as teleworking options, reducing the need for daily commuting.

UM’s commitment is also reflected in its Green Travel Plan (GTP) — a strategic framework designed to reduce dependence on single-occupancy vehicles. The GTP is regularly reviewed through university-wide travel surveys, the latest of which was conducted in 2022. These surveys help us understand commuting habits and identify new opportunities for encouraging sustainable mobility.

Our main campus in Msida, adjacent to Mater Dei Hospital, is well-connected and easily accessible by public transport from all parts of the island. Other campuses, including the Junior College, Gozo Campus, and Valletta Campus, also benefit from robust public transport links.

By integrating research, community engagement, and practical mobility solutions, UM continues to lead by example in creating a more sustainable transport environment for current and future generations.
