Getting a University Email Address

All staff are provided with a University of Malta (UM) IT Account. Staff are required to activate their UM IT Account in order to start using their University email address and gain access to IT facilities and services (including wireless access, IT Services workstations, printing, scanning etc.) and to other resources available on the University campus network (e.g. SIMS, VLE and eJournals).

Activation of the UM IT Account requires the use of the activation code. Staff are requested to contact the Office for Human Resources Management & Development on +356 2340 3604, or by calling personally at Room 217, Administration Building, to be provided with their Activation Code. The activation codes are not sent via email due to security concerns.

The University provides two types of IT accounts for staff:

1. UM IT Account for Staff

Staff with a Council or Senate appointment and contract staff are allocated a University email address with the following format:

Name: John Borg
Email address:

The email address is published on the University of Malta staff online directory.

The underlying Council or Senate appointed staff and contract staff qualify for a UM IT Account for Staff:

  • Resident Academic Stream (Professor, Associate Professor, Senior Lecturer, Lecturer & Assistant Lecturer)
  • Research Stream (Senior Research Fellow, Research Fellow & Research Associate)
  • Visiting Teaching Stream (Visiting Professor, Visiting Associate Professor, Visiting Senior Lecturer, Visiting Lecturer & Visiting Assistant Lecturer)
  • Affiliate Staff (Affiliate Professor, Affiliate Associate Professor, Affiliate Senior Lecturer & Affiliate Lecturer)
  • Junior College Lecturer (Senior Lecturer II, Senior Lecturer I, Lecturer, Assistant Lecturer)
  • Permanent Administrative, Technical & Industrial Staff

2. UM IT Account for Casual Staff

Casual staff are allocated a University email address with the following format:

Name: John Borg
Email address:

Expiry of the University Email Address

Staff email addresses will remain active for the entire duration of service at the University. The notification of expiry of the address will be sent by email.
