Dawl AI Lab

Welcome to Dawl AI Lab

We are Dawl AI Lab, an applied artificial intelligence research laboratory within the Department of Artificial Intelligence at the University of Malta. This serves as a collaborative space where researchers, students, and practitioners work together to explore, develop, and apply Artificial Intelligence for real-world impact.

The lab takes its name from the Maltese word "Dawl", meaning "light". We chose this name for its dual meaning, which reflects our two core research pillars:

  • Light as a physical medium: foundational for computer vision applications such as drone and aerial capture, multimedia analysis, geospatial analysis and 3D scanning.

  • Light as clarity and discernment: AI applications that contribute to information transparency, media analysis and initiatives that strengthen public understanding of AI.

Through research, innovation, and community engagement, we aim to advance the responsible development and adoption of AI in Malta and beyond. We develop AI systems that address real-world challenges across two domains: the environment and information.

In the environmental domain, we work with computer vision, machine learning and drones for applications such as environmental monitoring, mapping and spatial analysis. In the information domain, we focus on media analysis, transparency tools and national AI literacy initiatives.

Whether you are a researcher, student, industry collaborator, policymaker, or simply interested in the future of AI, we welcome you to explore our projects, publications, initiatives and more.
