Impact

Dawl AI Lab’s projects are closely aligned with national priorities and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through collaborations with bodies such as the Cleansing and Maintenance Division, the Malta Digital Innovation Authority, Malta’s Planning Authority and the Broadcasting Authority of Malta, the lab translates AI research into operational tools for environmental management, urban planning, media regulation and public AI literacy.

Our portfolio of projects touches several UN Sustainable Development Goals:

 

SDG 4 – Quality Education:

NAIL, DIMAS and TMMU strengthen AI and media literacy for citizens, professionals and regulators.

 

SDG 5 – Gender Equality:

AIRAS focuses specifically on gender portrayals in online news and the evidence needed for fairer coverage.

 

SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure:

AWIGS, AICOM/AICOMv2, EMBAT, AAC, NBxAI and DIMAS advance responsible AI infrastructure and operational tools.

 

SDG 10 – Reduced Inequalities:

NBxAI, AIRAS, DIMAS and NAIL tackle representational inequality and the AI knowledge gap.

 

SDG 11 – Sustainable Cities and Communities:

AWIGS, AICOM, TALC, EMBAT and AAC support cleaner environments, better maps and more sustainable urban planning.

 

SDG 15 – Life on Land:

AWIGS and TALC help protect terrestrial environments by spotting and retrieving waste in places that are hard to reach.

 

SDG 16 – Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions:

NBxAI, AIRAS, DIMAS and TMMU strengthen media transparency, accountability and informed public debate.

Several projects also track technology readiness and deployment stages:

 

AWIGS: TRL 5 → TRL 7, moving drone‑based litter detection into operational use with CMD.

TALC: TRL 4 → TRL 6, validating UAV‑gripper‑AI systems in difficult terrain.

TMMU: TRL 6/7, delivering a working prototype and guidelines co‑validated with BA.

AICOM: Embeds AI directly into daily cleansing operations, not just as a pilot but as part of ongoing workflow.
