Counselling Services at the University of Malta

The University of Malta is seeking to appoint a Full-Time Psychologist to join the team providing Counselling Services at the University of Malta.

This position is being offered on a indefinite contract. Family-friendly measures applicable and an excellent CPD allowance is provided.


Eligibility

Applicants must be in possession of:

  • Academic qualifications in psychology; 
  • 5 years Professional work experience in clinical or counselling settings; 
  • Be fluent in English and Maltese

Applicants must be already in possession of:

  • A Masters in Educational/Counselling/Health/Clinical Psychology 
  • A warrant;
  • Post-Masters work experience is required

Salary

The salary for 2023 is €28,040 rising by annual increments of €531 up to a maximum of €31,226. On completion of five years of service in the grade, the appointee will, on satisfactory performance, be entitled to move on to the next salary band with annual increments of €596 up to a maximum of €33,518.

Further Information

The role of the Counselling Services Professional is to participate in the projects and initiatives of the University’s Counselling Services.

The selected applicant will be expected to:

  • Help individual students and staff in the Maltese or English Language as necessary, in accordance with their personal, social and educational needs;
  • Carry out standardised psychological assessments as required by the Counselling Services Unit. 
  • Provide individual and group support services to students and staff, addressing difficulties in dealing with relationships, personal concerns or any other issues in their life;
  • Manage a caseload and maintain accurate, up-to-date and confidential records;
  • Be familiar with other members of the University whose duties involve the welfare of students, and to liaise with them as appropriate and in accordance with the ethical guidelines of his/her respective profession;
  • Participate in therapy groups and workshops.
  • Co-operate with other members of the University’s Counselling Services in the preparation and management of programmes, projects and initiates. 
  • Work closely with the members of the Student Advisory Services.
  • Engage in their continuing professional development and skills upgrading necessary to remain current with the respective profession.
  • Provide guidance to other staff to help students and if necessary train them how to refer to the University’s Counselling Services.

The appointee is expected to work:

  • On a full-time basis, and will not be allowed to engage in any other gainful employment without the permission of the Council; and
  • At such places and during such hours as may be determined by the University authorities and the Head of the Counselling Services. On a weekly roster basis: - The Counselling Services Unit at the University of Malta provides a service on Monday to Friday between the hours of 08.00 and 20:00 during Winter hours (1st September to 15th June).  To meet this need winter working hours are between 07.30am to 16.45pm, except that on one of the days the applicant will be expected to work from 5.00pm till 8.00pm on a roster basis excluding recess weeks. The extra three hours will be considered as flexi hours and will be availed of on days agreed with the Head of Unit.  During Summer hours counselling services are provided between the hours of 07.30 to 1.30pm only.  

The Selection Procedure:

  • The evaluation of qualifications and experience claimed and supported by testimonials and/or certificates (copies to be included with the application).
  • Short-listing of candidates.
  • An invitation to short-listed candidates to a Selection Board interview.


The Selection Process:

In accordance with the guidelines, members of the Selection Board will establish the following selection criteria for the selection process:

  • Relevant academic qualifications
  • Relevant Academic / Work experience
  • Aptitude and suitability
  • Performance in interview

The appointment will be subject to a probationary period of one year to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University which are now or which may hereafter be in force.
