Applications are invited for the Full Time Post in Materials Engineering in the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Malta. 

The appointment will be on a one-year definite contract, subject to a six-month probationary period.

The appointee will be required to contribute mainly to teaching, administration and other activities of the Department of Metallurgy and Materials within the Faculty of Engineering, and as may be required by the University.

Candidates must be in possession of a Ph.D. or an equivalent research-based doctorate focusing materials engineering.  Experience in the following areas will be considered favorably: materials science, mechanical engineering, fracture mechanics, physical metallurgy and material selection.

The Resident Academic Stream is composed of four grades, being Professor, Associate Professor, Senior Lecturer and Lecturer. Entry into the grade of Lecturer or above shall only be open to persons in possession of a Ph.D. or an equivalent research-based doctorate within strict guidelines established by the University. 

The annual salary for 2023 attached to the respective grades in the Resident Academic Stream is as follows:

*Professor: €47,086 plus an Academic Supplement of €33,119 and a Professorial Allowance of €2,330
*Associate Professor: €43,219 plus Academic Supplement of €25,377 and a Professorial Allowance of €1,423
Senior Lecturer: €39,125 plus an Academic Supplement of €18,358
Lecturer: €32,561 with an annual increment of €641 to €34,484 and an Academic Supplement of €14,932

*The University will only consider appointing an applicant at the grade of Professor or Associate Professor, when the applicant already holds an equivalent appointment at a University or Research Institute of repute.

General Working Obligations:

The conditions of work for a Resident Academic of the University of Malta, are set out in the ‘Collective Agreement for Academic Staff of the University of Malta’ .

Full-time Resident Academic staff are required to give a commitment based on a 40-hour per week with flexible times throughout the year, that is not only during semester time, depending on agreed timetables and distributed reasonably between teaching, academic research and academic administration.

Full-time Resident Academic staff are normally expected to be available for four and a half days per week to deliver their academic duties, meet with students and to participate actively in the academic life of the Department, Institute, Centre or School.

The official lecturing times of the University will be between 08:00 and 20:00 hours. The University may specify that the lecturing load will be conducted predominantly in any specific periods of the day between 08:00 and 20:00 hours.

In accordance with their conditions of employment and in order to meet the requirements of their role, Resident Academic staff are required to work on campus throughout the academic year, except for periods of authorised absence. Consequently, Resident Academic staff are required to reside no more than forty (40) kms from Campus.

The appointment will be subject to a probationary period of six months and to the provisions of the Statutes, Regulations and Bye-Laws of the University of Malta which are now or which may hereafter be in force.

The Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering

The Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering is currently responsible for teaching and research in the following areas:

  • Surface Engineering:
           - Corrosion, wear and surface degradation and protection thereof
           - Coatings deposition, surface hardening including diffusion and LASER alloying technology
  • Mechanical surface processing
  • Advanced and innovative materials including, carbon nano-structures and nano-composites 
  • Materials engineering; theory, application and processing 
  • Bulk metallurgy of ferrous and non-ferrous alloys
  • Bulk mechanical testing
  • Advanced material analytical and characterisation methods
  • Specialised materials applications including biomedical, transportation, and heritage materials 

The department strives to achieve excellence in these areas of engineering, as well as expanding to other related areas, by its contributions to teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level, research, and strong collaboration with local industry and international partners and institutions. 

Through this post, the department is seeking to support its teaching staff compliment in materials science, fracture mechanics, physical metallurgy and material selection at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. As part of his/her duties, the appointee will thus be expected to teach, assist in the laboratory and develop programmes of study pertaining to relevant areas falling under this topic. The appointee will also be expected to participate in the teaching of other study-units for which the department is responsible and as may be directed by the Head of Department.  

Tasks which the appointee is expected to perform include:

  • Teaching, including lectures, tutorials, seminars, and laboratory practical work;
  • Supervision and examination of undergraduate final year projects;  
  • Examination of postgraduate research students; 
  • Developing, preparing and updating of course materials as directed by the Head of Department;
  • Continuous assessment of students, setting & marking of exam papers within established time-frames;
  • Administration duties of department, Faculty of Engineering and University as required;
  • Assist the department’s collaboration with local industry and thus aid in its efforts to maintain its relevance to society at large; 
  • Assist in the laboratory move operation; 
  • Develop, prepare and perform laboratory demonstrations, lab tours and school visits in order to promote STEM to young students and in general;  
  • Any other relevant duties as may be required by the University and directed by the Head of Department.

  • A short presentation on a subject allotted to short-listed candidates.
