Nan Hu 胡楠 is a lecturer in Chinese Studies at the University of Malta. She holds a PhD in Chinese and Comparative Literature from Washington University in St. Louis, USA. She teaches Chinese language at all levels, alongside courses on twentieth-century Chinese history, modern and contemporary Chinese literature, Chinese cinema, Chinese diasporas, and Chinese–English translation.
Dr Hu's research examines how modern China has imagined itself in relation to its various others, and the technologies through which these encounters were mediated: translation, print, dubbing, and film circulation. She is currently completing her first book, which traces how dubbed foreign films shaped Chinese experiences of the foreign in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. A second strand of her work concerns cultural contacts between China and the Mediterranean, particularly the formation of Chinese communities in Malta. Her research has been supported by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the China Postdoctoral International Exchange Program, the McDonnell International Scholars Academy, the Center for the Humanities at Washington University in St. Louis, and the Ministry of Education (Taiwan), among others.
