Anthony (Toni) Aquilina (Chevalier and Officier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques) is Associate Professor within the Department of Translation, Terminology and Interpreting Studies, Faculty of Arts, of the University of Malta, also collaborating with the Department of French in the same Faculty and with the French Department of the Faculty of Education. 

He graduated B.A. (Hons) at the University of London and DI.M.A.V., M. ès L., D.E.A., and D. ès L. at the University of Poitiers, in France. Served for twelve years as Subject Coordinator (French) and eight years as Area Coordinator (Languages) at the Junior College of the University of Malta.  Concurrently, he taught French Francophone Literature, 19th/20th Century French Literature and French-Maltese Translation Theory and Practice for the French Department of the Faculty of Arts. Over the years he won several prizes for his translations into Maltese: the Premio Ostana – Scritture in Lingua Madre (2014), and four times the National Book Council Prize (2006/2007/2008/2014).   

He read papers in various international conferences, held both in Malta and overseas.  Authored several papers in refereed journals and translated mainly original French works into Maltese, fourteen of which have already been published: ‘L’Arlesienne / L-Arlesjana’ (1993) by Alphonse Daudet, ‘L-Eté / Is-Sajf’ (1997/2013) by Albert Camus, ‘L’Amie de Madame Maigret / Il-Ħabiba ta’ Madame Maigret’ (1999) by Georges Simenon, ‘Le Petit Prince / Iċ-Ċkejken Prinċep’ (2000 / 2016) by Antoine de Saint Exupéry, ‘Marroca et autres contes / Marroca u Rakkonti Oħra’ (2003) by Guy de Maupassant, ‘La symphonie pastorale / Is-Sinfonija Pastorali’ (2005) by André Gide, ‘En Attendant Godot / Sa Ma Jasal Godot’ (2006) by Samuel Beckett, ‘Le Donneur d’eau bénite et autre contes / Tal-Ilma Mbierek u Rakkont Oħra’ (2007) by Guy de Maupassant, ‘L’Inutile Beauté et autres histoires/ Sbuħija Moħlija u Stejjer Oħra’ (2012) also by Guy de Maupassant, ‘Le dieu du carnage / L-Alla tal-Ħerba’ (2013) by Yasmina Reza, ‘Comme s’il en pleuvait / Neżlin bħax-Xita’ (2014) by Sébastien Thiéry, ‘Monsieur Ibrahim et les fleurs du Coran / Is-Sur Ibrahim u l-Fjuri fil-Koran’ (2014) by Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt, ‘Goût de France / Togħma Tajba ta’ Franza’ (2015) by Alain Ducasse, and ‘Malta Ħanina’ (2016) by Daniel Rondeau.

Other translations of his from English into Maltese include: ‘Busy Farm / Razzett Mimli Tħabrik’ (2014), ‘Busy Swimming / Ilmapark Mimli Tħabrik’ and ‘Busy Fire Station / Tħabrik f’Għassa tal-Pumpieri’ (2015) all by Rebecca Finn, ‘Catlore / Dinjet il-Qattus’ (2015) by Desmond Morris, ‘The Gruffalo / Il-Grufflè’ and ‘The Gruffalo’s Daughter / Bint il-Grufflè’ (2016) both by Julia Donaldson, as well as ‘The Friendly Giant / Il-Ġgant id-Dħuli’ (2016) by Gladys Masters. He also co-translated into Maltese ‘Many Lives, Many Masters / Ħafna Ħajjiet, Ħafna Mgħallmin’ (2011) by Dr Brian Weiss.

Professor Aquilina is the editor of Desmond Morris’s ‘The Boats of Malta – The Art of the Fishermen’ (2016). He also edited and co-authored: ‘Français-niveau intérmediaire’ (2003); ‘Théorie et pratique de la traduction littéraire français-maltais’ (2008), ‘Glossarju Franċiż-Malti / Malti-Franċiż’ (2009), ‘Glossarju Ġermaniż-Malti / Malti-Ġermaniż’ (2012), and ‘Literature in Translations / Il-Letteratura fit-Traduzzjoni’ (2013). Other literary and accademic contributions by him can be found in various anthologies, amongst others: ‘Jiflu Żminijiethom’, ‘Symposia Melitensia – 1 and 4’, ‘Il-Malti – LXXV / LXXVI / LXXVIII / LXXXIV’, ‘Dawl Ġdid Fuq Vassalli’, ‘Baħħara Tal-Kelma’, ‘L-Edukazzjoni hi Politika – Kitbiet Paolo Freire’, ‘Trentièmes Assises de la traduction littéraire – Arles 2013’, ‘Escritura en lenga maire – Premio Ostana – Scritture in longua madre’, ‘This Fair Land – an Anthology of Maltese Literature’, ‘Aspetti tat-Traduzzjoni Maltija’, ‘Beyond a Satin Sea’ and ‘L-Edukazzjoni bħala Esperjenza Demokratika – kitbiet John Dewey’.

He is also the General Editor of the Faraxa Publishing Translation Series (14 books) and is the pioneer in the field of film subtitling into the Maltese language, having co-authored the subtitle translations of the following films: ‘Les Choristes / Il-Koristi’, directed by Christophe Barratier, ‘Fight Club’ directed by David Fincher, ‘Le Havre’ directed by Aki Kaurismȁki, ‘The Notebook / Paġni Minn Ħajjitna’ directed by Nick Cassavetes, ‘Frozen / Ir-Renju tas-Silġ’ directed by Chris Buck u Jennifer Lee, ‘The Legend of Zorro / Il-Leġġenda ta’ Zorro’ directed by Martin Campbell, ‘Hitchcock’ directed by Sacha Gervasi, ‘Grave of the Fireflies / Qabar l-Imsiebaħ il-Lejl’ directed by Isao Takahata and ‘La vita è bella / Sabiħa l-Ħajja’ directed bt Roberto Benigni. His latest contribution in this field has been the translation, this time into English, of the Maltese subtitles of a Second World War documentary entitled: ‘Birgu – The People, The Journey’.

Finally, in the field of terminology, Prof. Anthony (Toni) Aquilina was the local academic responsible for the European Migration Network Asylum and Migration Maltese Glossary for the 2012 and 2014 editions, published under the auspices of the European Commission.
