The Bachelor of Communications (Honours) is a theory and practice-based course in which students analyse and gain skills in different aspects of Media and Communications.

Apart from exploring human communications in different contexts and providing training in the analysis of media representations, the programme helps the student keep pace with the latest media and communication trends and technologies, offering learning of a combination of theoretical and practical skills. The programme blend a framework of concepts, processes and experiences in the dissemination of knowledge to work-related problems graduates encounter throughout their career.

Throughout the programme, students learn how to understand the workings of the media and ways in which media research can contribute to their awareness of its influence in society and on the individual within different contexts. Following this, students are also taught how to use the different communications media that can lead to skills acquisition for careers in different media sectors (design, broadcasting, online communications, etc).

Apart from this, personal communications are also honed, going the whole range from understanding the workings of human communications and their different manifestations, to practice-based learning in, e.g., public speaking, presentation techniques, etc.

The areas of study include journalism; design and visual communications; marketing communications; film, video and broadcasting; and internet communications. Students also explore human communications in different contexts, as well as the latest media and communication trends and technologies in various settings.

Requirements of the Programme:

The course is in two parts. The first part is made up of the first two years, in which compulsory units in the different aspects of communications are delivered. Students are also allowed four optional units that they can choose from all courses on offer at the University of Malta. There are also four support units: philosophy, psychology, sociology and English/Maltese, in which the relationship of these topics with communications is explored.

The second part of the course comprises the third year. During this year, students are expected to write a dissertation, experience practical work by means of a placement, and do one mentored project, all in one area of focus. The rest of the units delivered during this year are electives. This means that the student can select units from his or her area of focus.

Applicants must satisfy the General Entry Requirements for admission, namely, the Matriculation Certificate and Secondary Education Certificate passes at Grade 5 or better in Maltese, English Language and Mathematics.

Applicants must also satisfy the following Special Course Requirements:

An Intermediate Level pass in English.

The admission requirements are applicable for courses commencing in October 2020.

By the end of their course students will have analytical knowledge in all the areas listed. They will also have practical skills in many of the production-based topics. In the third year of the course, students are encouraged to focus on a topic related to media and communications. A placement, a dissertation and a mentored project consolidate this focus. The theoretical overview is enhanced with hands-on applications enabling the student to operate in a convergent and multi-skilled media environment.
Students who benefit from the B.Comms. (Hons) programme are those who are interested in the different aspects of media, both as a research area and as an area in which they can be players themselves. Both aspects are of particular use to those who intend to work in journalism, film, video production and television, other areas of broadcasting, graphic design, photography, digital and online publishing.
Job opportunities for those who complete the B.Comms. (Hons) course include, among others, careers in journalism, the media, film, script writing, public relations, advertising, corporate communications, design, digital and online publishing, broadcasting or marketing positions.

Students who successfully complete the B.Comms. (Hons) at the required level are eligible to read for the Master of Arts in Media and Communications (by Research) offered by the Department of Media and Communications, Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences. A taught Master of Arts in Media and Communications is envisaged to start in October 2018. Those students whose area of focus is Marketing Communications are eligible to read for the Master of Arts in Integrated Marketing Communications offered by the Department of Corporate Communications, Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences. Those students who focus on design and visual communications may read for the Master in Fine Arts (Digital Arts) offered by the Department of Digital Arts, Faculty of Media and Knowledge Sciences. Students whose area of focus is film and video production may read for the Master of Arts in Film offered by the Faculty of Arts.
Students who wish to participate in an ERASMUS exchange are encouraged to do so during the first semester of the second year of the course. It is preferable that, wherever possible, students find study unit equivalence in their institution of mobility prior to permission being granted for their participation.

Students are required to consult the department for further guidance vis-à-vis mobility period.
