The MTL Dissertation Committee is appointed by the Faculty Board of the Faculty of Education to oversee and coordinate the study-unit EDU5001- Research Component B: The Dissertation, in the Master of Teaching and Learning (MTL) Course. The Dissertation Committee holds briefing meetings for all first-year MTL students by the end of their first semester of studies to inform them about the procedure to be followed from proposal to submission stage of the MTL dissertation. Students are to submit their dissertation proposals by the deadline set by the Dissertation Committee. The Dissertation Committee meets to review all submitted dissertation proposals. In evaluating these proposals, the Committee takes into consideration a number of criteria, primarily that: the abstract demonstrates that the student has conducted some preliminary readings; the proposed research or project design reflects Masters level thinking, is clearly articulated and allows enough time for adequate analysis; in the case of empirical studies that the proposed research method/s is/are feasible and adequate for the data that the student proposes to gather; in the case of projects, that there is clear evidence of theoretical input and logical planning for implementation and evaluation; that the research or project work may be reasonably completed in the stipulated timeframe. Following the evaluation process, the Dissertation Committee approves or rejects the proposal or may refer proposals back to the student for amendments and resubmission. A Supervisor, and/or Co-Supervisor, and/or the student may request the Dissertation Committee to ask the Faculty Board for a change of the Principal Supervisor and/or Co-Supervisor, giving the reasons for such a request. In exceptional circumstances, the Dissertation Committee itself will advise the Faculty Board on the appropriate course of action to be taken should a situation develop which, in the opinion of the Dissertation Committee, necessitates a change of Supervisor and/or Co-Supervisor. Students’ progress is to be noted in writing on the official Faculty of Education Dissertation Progress Diary. The Dissertation Committee may consult such Dissertation Progress Diary while the study-unit is still on-going. The Dissertation Progress Diary is to be submitted by the students to the Dissertation Committee along with the dissertation. Students must submit dissertations by the date determined by the Dissertation Committee during the second year of studies (or third year of studies for part-time students). Supervisors and/or students shall inform the Dissertation Committee as a matter of urgency if a major difficulty arises which, in their opinion, might prejudice the presentation of the dissertation according to established procedures or the scheduled submission date. The Dissertation Committee nominates members of the Board of Examiners for each dissertation based on suggestions made by the Supervisors. The Faculty Board recommends such nominations to Senate for official appointments.
