Sustainable development goals

Goal 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere

The University of Malta set up the PROMISE Research Cluster which aims to work for the eradication of poverty in Malta over the next decade and to contribute towards the creation of a world free of poverty and inequality.

Goal 2: Create a world free of hunger by 2030

Through research conducted at UM, Dr George Attard is verifying the origins of Maltese indigenous species; Prof. Everaldo Attard is committed towards the preservation of local varieties like bees and a local grape vine.

Goal 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages

Dr Jeffrey Bonnici, medical doctor and toxicologist, researches recreational drugs to predicting future trends and create legislation to prevent deaths.
Prof. Neville Calleja talks about how through his work he aims to address SDG 3.8 which deals with universal healthcare coverage.

Goal 4: Ensure quality education for effective learning outcomes

Goal 8: Promote inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all

The Centre for Labour Studies focusses on the world of work and places workers' interests at the heart of its mission through its teaching and learning. Prof. Krista Bonello Rutter Giappone speaks about this.

Goal 9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialisation and foster innovation

In the video Prof. Inġ. Paul Refalo explains that through extensive research, the energy efficiency of manufacturing processes as well as the environmental impact of various products are studied.

Goal 11: Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable

Goal 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

Dr Censu Caruana and Prof. Mark Mifsud, from the Centre for Environmental Education & Research at the University of Malta, talk about consuming local products.

Goal 15: Sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss

Prof. Sandro Lanfranco talks about the best ways to restore our ecosystems. Prof. Sebastiano D'Amico, explains what the Department of Geosciences focusses on in addressing this SDG.

Goal 16: Promote just, peaceful and inclusive societies

Prof. Ivan Mifsud states that the Rule of Law is a crucial theme in the courses offered by the Faculty of Laws. Watch the video.

Goal 17: Revitalise the global partnership for sustainable development

Prof. Stefano Moncada talks about the importance for the Institute of Islands & Small States to create partnerships with universities from islands and small states from all corners of the world.
